Test sails underway!

How lovely it is to go sailing in the evening after work! Lighter evenings and fabulous weather make memories of the winter fade rapidly.

The perfect boat of course, to carry out what is one of life's simple pleasures, is the Rustler 33. It is fast with no drama, simple to handle, fantastically easy boat to sail: a true crowd pleaser (there are always admiring glances!).

But, don't just take our word for it, pick up a copy of the April edition of Yachting World, and see what they have to say.....

Employment & order book

The unseasonably beautiful weather has led to people to start buying again (hurrah!), we are not exactly inundated, but have plenty of work, and indeed have just recently employed a GRP resin infusion specialist to help back-up our composites team - we are also looking for really good joiner! We believe that we may be the only yacht builder actively employing extra staff currently.

Our current order book takes us through most of 2012 and a bit of 2013 (with a few gaps). If you are keen to discuss a new boat, please do contact us sooner rather than later. Prices will inevitably be under pressure for 2013 deliveries if not confirmed soon.

Rustler car analogy

We were asked the other day, what Rustler would be if it was a car(!). About a decade ago, one of the Yachting magazine suggested that the Rustler 42 was 'a true Bentley of a yacht' which at the time seemed about right: big, beautifully built and faster than it had to be!

Taking away any of the 'footballer' connotations, we would be pretty happy to stick with Bentley, but then four of recent owners drive Morgans, and they have all suggested they share similarities.

Certainly, in terms of goals and customer base, Morgan seem to fit the bill, and modern Morgans are far more comfortable than they used to be! The similarities are far more marked in our production facilities: when walking through a seemingly old fashioned build process you come across an engineer fiddling with new software on a digital switching system, or designing a new electric drive for propulsion, and of course you then discover that vacuum infusion is taking over from traditional hand lay-up in the composites area.

So, we are like Morgan then - unless you think otherwise?

What a difference a month makes!

I know that it is very English to speak about the weather, but really….. the last newsletter had an image of solid ice outside. If we were to take a similar image from the same position right now, it would have the Boat Yard guys strutting around in t-shirts enjoying the sunshine! It is quite bizarre, and perhaps a reason for the rather slow start to 2012 new boat sales.

However, things are picking-up! A couple of new yacht contracts always make us happy – particularly one from the USA which will be the second new boat in as many years to be sold via our agent there (not counting the many Rustler 24s which have been popular for some time now).

If you would like to have a look around our factory, and see for yourself the level of craftsmanship and quality produced here, all you have to do is telephone to let us know when would be convenient for you.

Currently in build, we have a couple of Rustler 44s, three Rustler 24s and a bay is being prepared for a new Rustler 36. Alongside of these, we have two larger refit jobs, and the moulds for the Rustler 33 being waxed. Anyone with even a mild interest in boats tends to enjoy a quick tour around!

Of course, once you have ordered your new boat, you will want to watch it being built. Almost all of our customers enjoy taking some time out to ‘get to know’ their new boat – even our most famous customers (HRH The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence) have visited their new Rustler 44 on a regular basis. SO much more special than just collecting from the dealer or importer!

The wonders of the refit department

If you have a boat with a teak deck that really needs to be replaced, don’t panic! Yes, it can be a big job to do, and yes that does mean that the cost can be fairly high. But those for whom we have completed replacement decks are all very happy - they get their pride and joy back looking as good (if not better) than new.

The Bowman 40 (above) is a classic example of a well made cruising yacht from the early 1990s. This particular example has done a few miles (it’s what they were made for) and as a consequence the deck had seen better days. After a couple of months work, she really is looking great again, and has very happy owners.

We currently have five larger refit projects underway, and as our reputation for excellent cost effective refit management spreads, this part of the business is set to grow well.

Brrr, it's cold outside!

After a mild start to winter, it’s fair to say the ‘big chill’ has finally reached Cornwall. Braving the cold to take a photo without a coat on was indeed painful! However, it is stunning out there. Take a look at the above photo - that's the view from our office -the Penryn River is frozen solid. The daily rowers (which I was unable to capture) turned back as they got stuck in the ice! Thank goodness we are nice and toasty, admiring afar the prettiness Jack Frost has lain!

Boat Shows

Just back from the Dusseldorf boat show, where we showed a beautiful red Rustler 24, and a cream R33 with teak decks. We saw lots of interest, and we finally seem to have cracked selling the R24 as a lake boat with boats sold to Salzburg, Geneva and a couple of lesser know Austrian lakes. Good news!

We get asked quite often why we attend Dusseldorf and not London (boat show), and the answer is pretty simple: for a similar cost (to Rustler) we can show our boats off to approximately 250,000 visitors in a country where quality British made products are well liked and sell (even through the current economic turmoil).

In London, much as we would like to support the Show, the footfall is some way less than half that of Dusseldorf, and the atmosphere in the south hall, which is where we would be put, seems to us to be aimed at motor boat buyers rather than our target market.

Still, never say never, and if the organisers pursue the London Show again for next year, and can prove that they will attract people like you (our customers!), then we may well exhibit in 2013!

If not now, when?

You may have seen a fabulous feature in the recent Yachting World on the best of British boat building. No surprise that Rustler features heavily. What struck a chord with us, though, was a quote from Richard Mathews (ex Oyster owner and clear marketing genius).

He was talking about those with the ability (financial and time available together with fitness of body and mind), who clearly want to purchase their dream yacht and go cruising, but have decided that with the current economic situation, to postpone their purchasing decision. To paraphrase him ‘you have to ask yourself, how long have they got?’

We may not have put it quite like that (!), but suffice to say that those potential customers of ours who have held on to their money ‘to see what will happen’, are not nearly so happy as those who have made the jump, have their boat, and look forward to warm seas and adventure.

We are showing a beautiful scarlet Rustler 24, together with a cream Rustler 33 at the forthcoming Dusseldorf boat show (Jan 21st -29th). November News!

November seems to have flown by. It seems like Christmas has crept up out of nowhere. Just three weeks until the big day.....would you like a Rustler under your Christmas Tree?

This month, we thought it would be good to write about something relatively educational....how to fit a Rustler 44 deck, read on to find out more.

We've also demonstrated how easy it would be to tow the Rustler 33 and introduced 'Morgana of Falmouth' - a stunning addition to our Rustler 42 family.

Fitting a Rustler 44 Deck

Ever wondered how we fit all the pieces together? Well, our very own Dan Holmes (Rustler 44 charge hand) has written a comprehensive set of instructions on how to fit the deck....and all in two days!?

When we fit the bulkheads, we leave them slightly long to allow us to fit them to the shape of the underneath of the deck! Once the deck is dry fitted, we dry fit the teak cappings, mix up some 'buff ralliseal' which is a 2 part dough, put a layer between the deck and hull flange and then another between the deck flange and capping. The next stage is to bolt the cappings down using 300 M8X60mm bolts, tighten again and plug the bolt hole. We then router out the seam on the capping joints ready to apply the sikaflex, screw the rubbing strake to the side of the capping which has been scarfed together in one long length beforehand. Finally, we sand the capping all over the router and put the final radius on the outer edge. Now it’s ready to apply all the stainless fittings!

Towing the Rustler 33

Many of you out there who are following the progress of the Rustler 33 have picked-up on a recent blog we posted. It related to towing the boat, and the possibilities that this would open up. This image was taken in our Yard just after putting up the mast and prior to launch. Sure, you need a boat yard to put up the mast and launch the boat, but it can all be completed in an hour or so, so no big deal.
Towing the boat is easy, and if you have had some experience and have the right vehicle, then really it does mean that you can take this fabulous boat on holiday with you! South of France, here we come…..

Morgana of Falmouth joins the Rustler 42 Family!

This new Rustler 42 really does show what Rustler does best: listen to our customer and produce the yacht that they really want! Our standard interior finish is in a beautiful honey coloured European oak, but this customer wanted cream t&g panelling with teak trim, interior furnishings are by Osborne & Little. The boat has a ‘boatranet’ (it’s own wifi), coloured spars and a cracking set of Hydranet sails from our brilliant local sailmaker, Penrose. The result is; well just wonderful!

We have just returned from a long weekend showing the Rustler 33 off to members of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club. A good weekend, and our grateful thanks go to the Club for allowing us access.

The boat was very well received, and all who sailed with us seemed to enjoy themselves!

The trip highlighted how easy this boat is to trailer-sail. Sure you need a boatyard to launch the boat, but hitched up behind an appropriate vehicle (a Landrover Discovery 4 in our case), it really is a simple procedure to tow the boat yourself. This opens a whole new world of possibilities for family holidays! The Italian Lakes? The South of France? Easy.

Sea Trials, Test Sails & More Refit Work

As the nights draw in and the temperatures start to plummet, it's safe to say that winter is fast approaching. It's also pretty evident that we have come to the end of another sailing season by the amount of boats we have in our Boat Yard already. Here's hoping to a long and cheerful 2012 sailing season. Well, we can only hope!

We continue to see a lot of interest in the new Rustler 33, and have been demonstrating the boat - and all others in the Rustler range in all types of weather.

Many of the Yachting Magazines are now also booked for trial sails - so you can expect to see the R33 in your favourite magazine shortly!

When the Rustler 33 came back from the Southampton Boat Show, she underwent her final finishing touches in preparation for her highly anticipated sea trials and photo shoot. Our photographer Richard Langdon of ‘Ocean Images’ came down to a very overcast Falmouth but within a few hours of him being here the weather miraculously changed. The sun shone, conditions were fantastic and he managed to get some pretty good photos. Our favourites have now been picked and a Rustler 33 brochure is currently being put together!

Here are a couple of skillful characters (!): Sol Stainer, Dave Brunyee and Gary Cowell. Sol runs the refit team alongside Dave (and others), and these two are never happier than fitting a new plank into a classic racer, or re-decking a tired world cruiser! Gary however, doesn’t understand why boats have sails when they have ‘perfectly good diesel engines to push them along’! As a diagnostic diesel engine and systems engineer, Gary is one of the best.

If you have a problem, or require service work to be done, please do call Emma here at the office. She will be able to find you the right person for the job!

Whilst most of the UK and European mainland has been enjoying spectacular weather, Cornwall has isolated itself in a seemingly never ending mist for the last three weeks...... this is particularly frustrating when we really needed to trial sail our lovely R33 and take some decent photos!

However.......

.....finally we had a bit of luck! More pictures to follow.

Southampton Boat Show, Falmouth Boat Yard & Falmouth Yacht Services

Firstly, apologies for the delay in getting the September newsletter out to you. As you can imagine, September is one of the busiest months with the Southampton Boat Show. Our team arrived back in Falmouth only last week. Exhausted but happy at the turnout of the show!

The show season is well and truly underway - and, as always, it's great to see what everybody else in the industry has been up to! New models abound from the mainstream producers, and a few interesting new yachts have appeared from the 'high end' of the spectrum. Having read most of the reports however, it does seem that the Rustler 33 'stole' the Southampton show!

Our new boat really did look the part, sitting happily next to the Rustler 24; it really was a pleasure to see peoples reaction.

We are now planning demonstration sails, initially in Falmouth and then along the South Coast and possibly on to the Lake District. If you would like to have a sail, please do contact us on the normal number.

The end of the season

Our busy boat yard - Falmouth Boat Yard, is now in full swing with the first few of what ends up being some 240 yachts hauled out. For those of you looking for a great place to 'winter' your boat, please do give us a call: we can lift up to forty tons and the Yard is tree-less and clean. Also, we tend to be a good deal less expensive than some other South Coast yards!

A fabulous refit opportunity!

Our refit team - Falmouth Yacht Services is just about to start an interesting project. We are starting a complete internal refit (everything!) on a Gallant 53. The family owned yacht is well loved, but most of the interior fit-out and equipment has reached the end of its usable life. We will refit her to 'Rustler' standards, and she will then give many more years of service.

Rustlers can be seen at boat shows in Holland, America, and of course our home show in Southampton this month. The Southampton Show opens tomorrow (16th September) and we are very happy to be presenting our new Rustler 33 for the first time.
